Mama Robin and the Baumanns

So one day Trent says to me, "Did you see that you have a bird building a nest in your old pot on the deck?" And thus our journey with Mama Robin began. We watched her build up her nest with the remnants of my old ivy plant as a foundation. Pretty little circles of grass and twigs. Sean was enthralled with the whole process, as we all were. Since she was just outside our deck sliding glass door, we had a perfect view of "Mama Robin" during her entire stay at the Baumann house. First one egg, then 2, then 3, then four. Four beautiful Robin's Egg Blue eggs. We watched them carefully for about 2 weeks. Then one day when we peeked in on Mama Robin there was a baby bird! The next day another, and another, and another.

We were so intrigued by her feeding the babies worms, bugs, insects. How cool. Nature at work. Then I came home on day last week and immediately went to check on our adopted family.

Oh no! One of the birds was gone! Down to three! Trent scoured the yard below, and we thought for sure the baby had met it's fate with an owl, squirrel, or some other terrible death. So now we were worried for the other little birds whom we had grown so fond of. Where as Mama Robin had grown so used to us peaking in on here, we felt like babysitters! She left for extended periods and left the babies alone. We assumed she had to gather a lot more food and also try to regain her energies as well.

So the next morning I was up early. Go figure. I went to the curtain and peaked at the babies. Three left, no Mama Robin in sight. I thought I should maybe get a picture of Mama, so I went to grab my camera. When I came back little bird #2 was standing up shaking his little wings--and then "woosh"!!! Off he went flying into the woods! Holy cow! It was amazing to see that little guy take off for the very first time in his life, and I SAW IT. It was so cool. Then the realization came over me that little bird #1 must have flown the day before. And wouldn't ya know it, the next day #3 and #4 were gone too.

So that's the story of Mama Robin and the Baumanns. Pretty sweet.
